Sit Less and Heal Your Back

Hi.
This is Joe Tatta, Physical Therapist., helping you to move towards better health.
In today’s video, I’ll be talking about three (3) exercises you can do to Sit Less and Heal Your Back.
Don’t be surprised. The average American sits anywhere between twelve (12) and eighteen (18) hours a day; once you take everyday things into consideration like commute time, sitting at your desk in front of a computer, and then more time at home in front of a computer or the television. All that time adds up to a lot of sedentary behavior, which we know has been linked to cardio problems, weight gain, obesity, diabetes …and even cancer.
As a physical therapist, the first thing I think about is back pain because we know that too much sitting can really cause pain in your back.
Today, I want to give you three (3) quick tips on how you can decrease sitting AND decrease your back pain. The three steps are as follows:

  1. Use your smart phone to set a timer to remind yourself to move.
  2. Stand up and do some standing extensions, between five (5) and ten (10) repetitions every 50 minutes to an hour.
  3. Give yourself the extra lumbar support you need in your chair.
