Mindfulness-Based Pain Relief Elaine Mele, PT, DPT, PYT
Elaine has more than 20 years of experience as a physical therapist and 15+ years in the yoga business. She holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Arcadia University and a Professional Yoga Therapy Certificate from PYTI. During her career, Elaine has had the opportunity to work with all types of populations, from infants through geriatrics, athletes and professional musicians to novices. She has found her niche blending the science of physical therapy with the wellness (although, still science!) aspects of yoga therapeutics to deliver personalized treatment and consultation that personally fits into her clients’ lives.  Her work with aging adults and children with disabilities has enabled her to help teach caregivers how to best take care of the ones they love while also taking care of themselves. Education and life balance is a life long pursuit so Elaine spends a lot of her non-work time exploring many interests including travel, time with family and friends, hiking, paddle-boarding, a variety of movement classes and sometimes just simply relaxing with a good book and a cup of tea! I am Dr. Katie Henson PT, DPT, FNCP and founder of Body in Rhythm Physical Therapy and Wellness. I have over 6 years of clinical experience in treating a wide range of conditions across the lifespan. My clinical focuses include treating pelvic health, women’s health, and persistent pain conditions.

I have have found many barriers to physical therapy rehabilitation in the past that seemed out of my hands. Some of these barriers include poor diet and nutrition, lack of adequate physical activity, poor coping strategies for stress, and lack of adequate sleep. I am certified in Functional Nutrition for Chronic Pain (FNCPC) and work with patients to help them heal better and hurt less through nutrition and diet. I also use mind-body interventions with patients to help them overcome these barriers and feel their very best.

Headshot for website

I am a Functional Health Coach based in Hastings, East Sussex. For the last 20 years, I have been on a journey of health and healing. Since my twenties, I have recovered from chronic back pain, cancer, fertility treatment and a thyroid disorder. I used sleep, physical movement, nutrition and stress management practices to support me during through these stressful times.

This journey developed into a passion for self-education and self-practice in health and wellness. Inevitably, I became inspired to share my experiences with others, so that they too can have improved health. So I left my career in corporate law and retrained as a yoga teacher and an ADAPT Certified Functional Health Coach.

I now work online coaching all kinds of people, helping them to achieve their health and lifestyle goals. I love seeing my clients become healthy, happy and resilient by creating simple daily changes and tapping into the body’s amazing capacity to heal itself.

My passion is the management of persistent pain and the extent to which pain can be helped by good quality sleep, functional nutrition, physical movement, nervous system regulation and pain education. I believe in the body’s innate capacity to heal. Helping the body to heal requires an understanding of the key aspects of health and it requires taking charge of your own health. I love to help people in pain take charge of their health by improving their relationship with their bodies, sleeping better, eating better, feeling less stressed, suffering less from their pain, engaging in social connection and simply enjoying daily life.

There are so many different approaches to wellness and there is no one size fits all solution. I love to help each person analyse all the available information, then find the best options for that unique individual to explore. I strongly believe that so many people in pain could have a much better quality of life if they were able to make some changes to their diet and lifestyle. However, those changes can be so hard to make – I love to help people find their motivation to make those changes. Behaviour change is not easy at the beginning. A realistic approach is essential to making diet and lifestyle changes. I meet people where they are at and let them set the pace for change. The key is to make small, incremental improvements – that last.

A few years ago I had back pain with nerve symptoms down the leg. It was scary, I wasn’t able to complete my normal yoga practice, let alone sit for very long or drive. It was through the combination of physical therapy, yoga and massage, that I was able to heal and stay pain free. These technique have also helped me to heal from a cesarean, and a recent colon surgery. So now it is my mission to share this information with others so they can have more confidence and feel better in their bodies without pain, so they can enjoy the activities they love. Even if your MD doesn’t recommend PT after a surgery or injury I can guarantee investing in yourself now will help to prevent future issues down the road. And, even if your injury was many years ago you can still make progress now! Amber started as a little girl massaging her grandmother’s feet and making up “treatments” for her arthritis. Growing up as a dancer, Amber experienced her own fair share of injuries, including a 5 year journey with chronic neck pain! For dancers, athletes, and all people, suffering an injury can be devastating from a physical and emotional standpoint. This is why I feel strongly about working with individuals to help them prevent and recover from injuries that can affect their livelihood and wellbeing. I am passionate about helping each patient return to the activities he or she loves, and empowering them to be in charge of their recovery through education, guidance, and coaching. I feel strongly about working with clients in a holistic manner, looking at all factors that may impact health such as sleep hygiene, stress management, nutrition and hydration, posture and ergonomics, exercise, and social engagement. I look forward to getting to know you as an individual and helping you thrive!

I have worked as a physical therapist since 1995. I work with people who have had orthopedic surgery, injuries, or are experiencing difficulty due to pain and/or movement problems. I love helping others function better, move better and feel better so that they can do what they want and need to do in their daily life including work, hobbies, sports, and recreation.

I help others through movement, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, nutrition, sleep, stress management, pain education and more. I like to empower others, through knowledge and motivation, to make important lifestyle changes that will limit or prevent the need for pills, injections, or surgery.

Even after nearly 25 years as a therapist, I am still passionate about what I do and I take time every day to learn and become better at helping others.

I am thrilled to share my love of movement and wellness education with you. My first inclination towards a career in healthcare began as a junior in high school when I was working with a young man with special needs after sports practice two to three days per week. I was never as interested in my school work as I was in our visits! As an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go Badgers!), I remained actively involved in athletics as a member of the women’s ice hockey team and as a volunteer with the Adaptive Sports and Fitness program. During my third year of school, I was blessed with the opportunity to travel abroad to Spain to study at the Universidad de Sevilla. The experience changed my life and ultimately my course of study! I went on to complete my bachelors in Spanish and Latin American and Iberian Area Studies, which led me on a journey that included work with AmeriCorps as a community educator and citizenship counselor in Jersey City, New Jersey. I later completed graduate studies at Columbia University and Harvard University in Adult Language and Literacy Education with an emphasis in community health education.

After teaching for 10 years in the schools and with an adult community center in the Boston area, I realized that my passion for human movement and wellness was unfulfilled. I took pre-med courses at night and life brought me to the University of Vermont. While a full-time doctoral student of physical therapy, I worked as a learning specialist and academic coach with students at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM. I completed my Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2010.

I have since completed post-graduate training with experts from around the world in manual therapy, Postural Restoration, Pilates method, Osteoporosis management, neurodegenerative conditions, and Schroth Method for 3D scoliosis management with the Schroth-Barcelona Institute. I have my board specialty certification in geriatric physical therapy since 2015 and completed my certification in Functional Nutrition for Chronic Pain with the Integrative Pain Science Institute in July 2019.

Outside of work, I cherish my time with family, friends and furry critters. I enjoy running, cycling, and hiking local trails. When I am not romping around in nature, I am probably planning my next outdoor adventure!

Jennifer-3

Jennifer’s love for movement started at the early age of seven. A native of Westchester County, she studied ballet and modern dance for over twenty-two years. Jennifer was first introduced to Pilates in 1995, while earning a BFA in Dance Performance at SUNY Purchase. Recovering from a stress fracture in her foot, she took Pilates sessions in place of her technique classes. After noticing the amazing result of her rehabilitation, she pursued teacher training upon graduation in 1998. She completed the intense 600 hours of training under Romana Kryzanowska, a Master teacher trained by Joseph Pilates, and completed her training in April of 2000.

Jennifer’s teaching experience began at SUNY Purchase with the Purchase Dance Corp. As a performing member, Jennifer was also the rehearsal director for the children in the annual production of “The Nutcracker” for The Purchase Dance Corp.

Jennifer taught Pilates and was the Program Director of Brooke Siler’s re:AB Pilates for five years. She has also taught Pilates at Peridance, Drago’s Gym, The Pilates Studio, Equinox, New York Health and Racquet, and Casa Day Spa.

She has continued her Pilates education with the late Romana Kryzanowska, Sari Santo, Brooke Siler, Bob Liekens, Michael Fritzke, Ton Voogt, Cynthia Lochard, Sandra Zeuner and Cary Regan, as well as attending many conferences for teachers.

Her love of movement and teaching others has inspired her to open The Pilates Movement. Jennifer opened The Pilates Movement in January 2006.

In 2014 Jennifer completed her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training at ISHTA Yoga under the direction of Alan Finger and in 2017 completed Restorative Yoga teacher training with Judith Hanson Lasater.

Theresa’s career started over 30 years ago after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with her BS in Physical Therapy. During this period, she worked in many aspects of the Physical therapy profession honing her skills and knowledge base. In 1999 Theresa turned her focus to pelvic health. In 2014 Theresa earned her Women’s Certification Specialization (WCS). This is a Board Certification through The American Physical Therapy Association. In 2015 Theresa achieved the only other certification in the field, Pelvic Rehabilitation Practitioner Certification through The Herman and Wallace Rehabilitation Institute recognizing expertise treating males and females. Few Physical Therapist have one of these certifications let alone both. Theresa finds pelvic health to be the most complex, rewarding, and fascinating specialty there is. Over these years Theresa has realized more than other areas of the body pelvic dysfunctions require a multi-modal approach. She works hard to keep abreast of the latest in pain science and effective pain management. Theresa opened The Pelvic Room in 2021. Her practice is located in a collaborative wellness center, The Healing Sanctuary. This location was next logical step in providing an environment which assists in nervous system calming. Alea Krause is a licensed physical therapist, currently working in Santa Cruz, California. She obtained her doctor of physical therapy degree from Azusa Pacific University in 2020 and completed a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from UC Santa Cruz in 2015. Prior to obtaining her doctorate, she worked as a high school swim coach, physical therapy aide, laboratory assistant, and day camp counselor. As a student athlete, she was constantly getting injured and saw a physical therapist for many years. After feeling uninspired in a laboratory setting, she turned to physical therapy as a potential career and fell in love. She enjoys working with young athletes, weekend warriors, general orthopedic injuries, neurological deficits, and those who want to return the things in life that bring them joy, whatever that may be. She is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 2018. She has taken courses in dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for chronic pain. Outside of the clinic, you can find her running, hiking, rock climbing, and spending time with loved ones. She is here to help you return to the joys in your life and help guide you through the physical therapy process.
