ACT for Chronic Pain is a cutting-edge clinical training program designed to show you exactly how to break the cycle of suffering by addressing the psychological causes of suffering.
Discover how to help your patients drop the struggle with chronic pain, reduce fear and anxiety, and reclaim a full and active life.
“The ACT for Chronic Pain course helped further my psychology-informed practice as a physical therapist. The concept of willingness to feel discomfort has helped so many of my patients change how they perceive their pain and has reduced their negative thoughts and beliefs surrounding pain.”
Michael Zabala Aquino, PT, DPT Owner of Deconstruct Health
Dear Practitioner,
Does any of this sound familiar?
If any of this resonates with you, you’re in the right place.
ACT for Chronic Pain is a new approach to treating pain based on the premise that while pain hurts, it is the psychological struggle with pain that causes suffering.
ACT teaches us that psychological suffering is caused by the influence of language and cognition on human behavior. Therefore, ACT targets the processes of language that are involved in the suffering associated with pain.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an evidence-based approach for overcoming pain that has been associated with the following outcomes:
Multiple studies bear this out, but the proof is in the pudding. When I began using ACT with my patients as a method of psychologically-informed physical therapy, I was surprised at the transformation.
Instead of ignoring, avoiding or trying to change unpleasant thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations, they began to willingly experience them. They became more aware of their surroundings and noticed what was happening around and inside them, re-engaging with the present moment. They developed effective behavior patterns guided by deep personal values and goals.
Best of all, they became more physically active and returned to activities that aligned with their values – despite the fact that they sometimes still hurt (a little). Pain didn’t disappear, but they were able to reclaim a richer, more active and full life.
As a practitioner, these results are tremendously gratifying. While I can’t wave a magic wand and make all their pain go away, I can help my patients find a level of calm and acceptance that enriches their lives.

“Joe is breaking ground on an important topic for all practitioners who treat pain. ACT is an empirically supported therapy that supports both the physical and emotional experience of pain. Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy with ACT improves patient outcomes and helps them return to a full and active life. I am able to incorporate the ACT principles in hand therapy and in my group program for patients with osteoporosis.”

Experience the satisfaction of helping your patients suffer less and enjoy life more.
ACT helps your patients drop the struggle with chronic pain by supporting them to:
A = Accept unpleasant thoughts, feelings, and sensations.
C = Choose a valued direction.
T = Take action.
Your patients will discover that it’s not pain itself, but rather the agenda to avoid, control or eliminate pain, that is the problem.
People are stuck, they are not broken.
Free them from needless suffering with ACT.
Psychological Flexibility
At the core of ACT is the concept of psychological flexibility. This is the ability to contact the present moment more fully; accept unpleasant thoughts, feelings, and sensations associated with pain; and align behavior to one’s long-term values rather than short-term impulses.
You see, a patient living with chronic pain experiences thoughts, feelings, memories, and physical sensations associated with pain. These thoughts, feelings and memories are often unpleasant, causing the patient to try to avoid, eliminate or change them. This can lead to a focus on pain and a narrow life. It is a rejection of the present moment, which always causes suffering.
In contrast, when a patient develops greater psychological flexibility, they are able to willingly accept and move forward with all of their thoughts, emotions and sensations. Their repertoire of reactions to pain grows and expands, and they are able to consciously choose to act in ways that support their values and engage with a more meaningful life.

ACT with Physical Therapy
The biopsychosocial model is the paradigm from which all health care professionals are expected to treat pain.
Using principles of ACT is psychologically-informed care and part of the scope of practice for physical therapists.
Physical therapists are now expected to recognize pain-associated psychosocial distress and modify their treatment.
However, a gap exists between being able to recognize the pain associated with psychosocial distress in patients, and having the competence and skills to effectively apply treatment to get the best possible outcomes.
That’s why I created ACT for Chronic Pain.
As a physical therapist, I know how overwhelming it can feel to find the time to learn a new modality and incorporate it into your practice. Understanding that you have limited time and energy, I designed ACT for Chronic Pain to make it as easy as possible for you to learn and master the skills of ACT and quickly and confidently apply them in your PT practice.
The training videos break down the essentials into bite-size chunks, with no fluff. The associated transcripts, guides, and worksheets make everything clear and simple. Plus, throughout the course, I’ve included plenty of real-life case studies so you can learn by example. Even the newest and busiest practitioner can do this!
Is this just for physical therapists?
No. ACT for Chronic Pain is for any practitioner working with chronic pain, including, but not limited to, physical therapists/physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, physicians, nurses, health coaches, fitness professionals, and more. If you work with clients or patients struggling with pain, this course is for you.
When you incorporate the tools and strategies in
ACT for Chronic Pain into your practice, you will:
“I highly recommend the ACT for Chronic Pain program. Weaving ACT into my physical therapy practice has been a game changer. It has shifted the focus from one of pain reduction to values-based living, and has helped tremendously with increasing movement and physical activity.”
